Daughters of Norway - Freya Lodge #50

On November 14, 2009, our new Daughters of Norway, Freya Lodge #50, was warmly welcomed by the Grand Lodge and sister member Lodges, at an Institution Ceremony held in Spokane, Washington.

The purpose of Daughters of Norway is to unite into a sisterhood women who wish to preserve Scandinavian heritage, history, culture and language - and to build a strong support system and bond of friendship within the sisterhood.

We gather monthly to share Nordic folk tales, Scandinavian cooking, folk arts, language lessons and more. If you have Scandinavian family ties, or have an interest in Nordic culture, you can become a member - we look forward to seeing you!

NEXT MEETING: "KNordic KNitting"!

NordicFairIsleHatNordic MittensNordic Sweater

WHEN: April 26th, 2014
Saturday at 10:00AM
(Please note the earlier time)

WHERE: A Grand Yarn, 1220 S. Grand Blvd., Spokane (between 12th & 13th, across from St. John's Cathedral) - 455-8213. There is very limited parking in front, but more available in back of store with rear entrance door. Also parking is available on the neighboring streets.

PARKING: It's alright to park in the Ginger Restaurant parking lot, but NOT Baskin and Robbins. As well, there are 3 parallel parking spaces across the 'drive thru' from Beau K Florist. Please DON'T park in Beau K's spots as their delivery trucks are busy going in and out on Saturdays. Carpooling is a great idea.

WHAT: PLEASE NOTE that we've had a change of venue for April's program on yarns and Scandinavian knitting patterns and designs. Instead of meeting at Paradise Fibers, we'll meet at a very cozy yarn shop, "A Grand Yarn".

The meeting will be a presentation on the intricate and beautiful Nordic-style of knitting...something we all love to wear! "A Grand Yarn" Owner Nancy Blossom and her daughter, Libby Blossom, are the mother/daughter ownership team. Nancy has an academic career as a professor of Interior Design and is an expert knitter - the Faire Isle design is her specialty. Libby comes from a Consulting and Architectural background and is a newbie knitter and is creative and talented in her own rite. This shop is on par with the finest shops one finds in Europe and it will be tempting for knitters and non-knitters alike to enroll in some of the wonderful classes "A Grand Yarn" offers!

Please add to the fun of this gathering by bringing your own example of Scandinavian/Nordic sweaters/mittens/hats/scarves to share with the membership. Whether it's something handed down through your family or something you created yourself, we'd love to see and to learn about it.

Please enjoy your breakfast prior to arriving this time - due to the coziness of the space and to ensure the yarns are kept clean, there will be no snacks or drinks provided at this meeting.

Kindly RSVP to Judy if you plan to attend, at 509-448-1182 or email her at

Hope you can join us for this truly Scandinavian cultural event!
