Daughters of Norway - Freya Lodge #50

On November 14, 2009, our new Daughters of Norway, Freya Lodge #50, was warmly welcomed by the Grand Lodge and sister member Lodges, at an Institution Ceremony held in Spokane, Washington.

The purpose of Daughters of Norway is to unite into a sisterhood women who wish to preserve Scandinavian heritage, history, culture and language - and to build a strong support system and bond of friendship within the sisterhood.

We gather monthly to share Nordic folk tales, Scandinavian cooking, folk arts, language lessons and more. If you have Scandinavian family ties, or have an interest in Nordic culture, you can become a member - we look forward to seeing you!

NEXT MEETING: Norway's Constitution Day!

No Norway Constitution Day Childrens ParadeNorway Fjords

Norwegian Bunadrosen

WHEN: May 17th, 2014
Saturday at 10:00AM

WHERE: Gina Nylund's home in Greenacres

WHAT: Greetings Freya Sisters! Our May 17 meeting will be at Gina Nylund's home in Greenacres at 10:00am. Gina and her husband were born and raised in Norway, so to have our program at their home on the 200th Anniversary of Sytternde Mai, Norway's National Holiday, is pretty exciting!

Our guest speaker, Sue Sutherland, comes from Ely, MN and is the owner of the Bunad Butikken. She'll be here teaching a class on how to make bunads at Gina's house for a few days, and having taught a similar class in Spokane two years ago, she has become a friend to many of us and our "go-to" source for information on authentic Norwegian costumes.

Certified by the Norwegian Government as a Bunad Maker and trained expert on Norwegian textiles, she is the foremost Norwegian Bunad Maker in America - to say she's fascinating to listen to is to put it mildly. Come and listen, ask questions about men's, women's and children's bunad fashions from your region of Norway, and learn about the jewelry, shoes, socks, aprons, purses and cloaks that accessorize these beautiful costumes.

She'll have limited quantities of shoes, fabrics, jewelry, patterns and more available to buy - and if she doesn't have something you'd like to buy with her, she can order it and send it to you. Please bring a snack to share with the group and be ready for a wonderful day!

Kindly RSVP to Judy if you plan to attend [or need directions], at 509-448-1182 or email her at

Hope you can join us for this truly Scandinavian cultural event!
