On November 14, 2009, our new Daughters of Norway, Freya Lodge #50, was warmly welcomed by the Grand Lodge and sister member Lodges, at an Institution Ceremony held in Spokane, Washington.

The purpose of Daughters of Norway is to unite into a sisterhood women who wish to preserve Scandinavian heritage, history, culture and language - and to build a strong support system and bond of friendship within the sisterhood.

We gather monthly to share Nordic folk tales, Scandinavian cooking, folk arts, language lessons and more. If you have Scandinavian family ties, or have an interest in Nordic culture, you can become a member - we look forward to seeing you!

:: FEBRUARY 25th, 2012 MEETING will be an excursion to explore and learn more about Scandinavian design. Lunch will follow.

Our cultural program will be presented by Christina Rothe of Dania on Scandinavian furniture/textile design. Dania's founder, Erling Eide, immigrated to the US in 1956 from Norway! Christina will make a presentation and then take us on a tour throughout the store which has some small flights of stairs. If you wish to skip the stairs, you can still enjoy the presentation and lunch across the street.

A "No Host Lunch" follows at 11:30 am, at the Onion Bar & Grill, 302 W Riverside, with a short business meeting.

Please RSVP to me if you are planning to attend. And bring a Scandinavian friend!

We encourage all of you to invite someone to our meetings. Perhaps a friend, relative or someone who has come before and just needs a phone call to know they are welcome. Membership is not a requirement to attend meetings.

Parking tip: There should be ample parking on the streets around Dania and the Onion on Saturday morning but be prepared with coins to feed the meter. There are also several surface parking lots in the area.

If you would like to join the Daughters Of Norway Freya Lodge #50, you can print out the convenient, printable application form below and bring it with you to the next meeting!

To be eligible for standard membership in a subordinate lodge of the Daughters of Norway, a woman must:

  1. be of Norwegian, Danish, Finnish, Icelandic, or Swedish birth or descent; or
  2. be married, or have been married to a man of Norwegian, Danish, Finnish, Icelandic, or Swedish birth or descent; or
  3. have a "slektning" (relative) married to a person of Norwegian birth or descent.
  4. She must be at least thirteen years of age.

:: Grand Lodge Scholarship Application and Guidelines

The Grand Lodge Daughters of Norway offers scholarships to full-time college, university, technical or vocational students who are either a member of, or related to a member of the Daughters of Norway. Applicants must have at least sophomore standing and a GPA of at least 2.7. They must complete the application form and ensure that it, and all required documentation is received by the Grand Lodge Scholarship Chairperson by June 1, 2012.

The number of applications varies with the funds, but at least one award of $1,000 is offered each year, with a second award in Convention years.
